(Roger Kimball The New Criterion) The publisher is justified in claiming that this version will henceforth be seen as the 'authoritative' edition in English." ( Choice) "It would be difficult to think of a greater service to the study of Tocqueville than the one performed by Mansfield and Winthrop in their impeccable new edition and translation of Democracy in America. Mansfield and Winthrop have made a remarkably comprehensive and tightly argued case for Tocqueville as the greatest political theorist of democracy, a theorist who is just as relevant today as he was in the nineteenth century." (Gordon S. "The editors have written more than a mere introduction they have written in fact a small book, a remarkably comprehensive and yet succinct study of Tocqueville's political thought. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Black lamb grey falconPlease see extended rules for appropriate alternative subreddits, like /r/suggestmeabook, /r/whatsthatbook, etc. ‘Should I read …?’, ‘What’s that book?’ posts, sales links, piracy, plagiarism, low quality book lists, unmarked spoilers (instructions for spoiler tags are in the sidebar), sensationalist headlines, novelty accounts, low effort content. Krishnamurti: Whereas total order in one's being, order in the mind, order in one's heart, order in one's physical activities - the harmony between the three is goodness. And it is disorder that leads to chaos, to destruction, to anarchy, to the so-called evil. I think that order can be absolute, as in mathematics I believe there is complete order. Not only outwardly, but especially inwardly. Now what is good? I feel goodness is total order. Venkatesananda puts important questions to Krishnamurti on traditional Vedanta methods: he invites Krishnamurti to scrutinize the paths of the four Yogas and the present-day validity of certain mahavakyas from the Upanishads. Professor Jacob Needleman asks about the present situation of the young, the role of the teacher, of tradition and its relation with direct perception, and the need for awareness of a “cosmic dimension.” With Alain Naudé he discusses the problem of good and evil, the fragmentation of consciousness and the possibility of psychological revolution. This is one of the most comprehensive texts of Krishnamurti's teachings, containing discussions with various individuals - including Professor Jacob Needleman, Alain Naudé, Swami Venkatesananda, and Professor David Bohm. This book is a must read-for any person interested in Krishnamurti and his teachings. *The Ebooks available from the Krishnamurti Bookstore are supported by all e-readers except Kindle. 5/23/2023 0 Comments Gordon s wood empire of libertyWhat I appreciate about these reviews is that they are neither a jeremiad against these trends in historiography nor an uncritical acceptance of the same. The reviews chronicle the “present concerns” of the last quarter century of historiography–critiquing such trends as “influence”, narrative, history as fiction, microhistory, history and political theory, postmodernism and history, race, class, gender, and multicultural concerns and history. A fundamental thread running through these essays is “why do we study the past?” Wood’s contention is that the past needs to be understood on its own terms insofar as possible and not through the lens of present concerns. This book is a reflection on the work of historians comprised of review articles appearing from 1981 to 2007, mostly in The New York Times Review of Books and in The New Republic. Pre-GoodReads, I read his Empire of Liberty in the Oxford History of the United States, a wonderful read and an intellectual tour de force. Gordon S Wood is certainly among the most distinguished American historians studying the period of the Revolution and early years of the American republic. 5/23/2023 0 Comments Lunatic onley jamesIt features a sexy, roguish degenerate and a hunky bleeding heart ginger who love how much they hate each other. Authentic Christian life is ready always for the renewing of heart and mind, ready always to consider the sort of challenge Glaude puts before us. Before all else in the moral life, he said in his commentary on Romans, comes the toppling of self-satisfaction wrought by divine grace: “Grace is the axe laid at the root of the good conscience.” So repentance, even if unpleasant, is essential to the Christian way of being. But if Karl Barth is right, repentance is the primary ethical act. Most Americans-and I do not exempt myself-will be to one degree or another ill at ease with this. His book is nothing less than a call to national repentance. That lie concerns race, and Glaude, who teaches at Princeton and is a familiar television commentator, addresses the lie with blistering candor. The true American exceptionalism, according to Eddie Glaude, is a lie that hollows out the nation’s soul and leaves its democracy flawed and threatened. It is hard to imagine a harsher assault on American self-satisfaction than the one in Begin Again. 5/23/2023 0 Comments The final masquerade ariana nash“And that’s another big factor in possibly just slowing down for a little bit and seeing kind of where this time takes me.” “My husband and I are trying to start a family, hopefully,” she told the publication.
